After old stories about hungry mice, many random guesses, and a hundred years of research, we now know why Swiss cheese has holes in it. And mice are not responsible.

(Dari cerita kuno tentang tikus yang lapar, banyak dugaan, dan seratus tahun penelitian, kini kita mengetahui mengapa keju Swiss memiliki lubang. Dan bukan tikus penyebabnya.)

There are holes in cheese because of hay. Very small particles of hay get into the milk and create holes when the milk turns into cheese.

(Terdapat lubang di keju karena jerami. Partikel jerami yang sangat kecil masuk ke dalam susu dan membuat lubang saat susu berubah menjadi keju.)

Over the last 15 years, the holes have been getting smaller, or are gone completely. This is thanks to modern milking systems –milk is much cleaner than before. The amount of hay dust added to the milk can control the number of holes.

(Selama 15 tahun terakhir, lubang-lubang tersebut menjadi lebih kecil, atau benar-benar hilang. Ini karena sistem pemerahan susu modern – susu jauh sangat bersih dari sebelumnya. Jumlah debu jerami yang masuk ke susu dapat mengendalikan jumlah lubang pada keju.)
