Maya Bay in Thailand made headlines in 1999 when Hollywood arrived there to film ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio.  Since then, tourists have flooded this beach with as many as 4,000 visitors arriving on boats every day.

(Maya Bay di Thailand menjadi berita utama di tahun 1999 saat Hollywood tiba disana untuk membuat film “The Beach” yang dibintangi Leonardo DiCaprio. Sejak saat itu, turis membanjiri pantai ini, sebanyak 4.000 pengunjung yang datang dengan kapal setiap hari.)

The mass tourism exhausted the once-pristine beach and ruined the natural life. That is why people closed the beach to tourists for four months. When it reopens by the end of September, they will impose a limit of 2,000 visitors per day.

(Turisme massal menghancurkan pantai yang dulunya masih alami dan merusak kehidupan alam. Oleh karena itu pantai ini ditutup untuk turis selama empat bulan. Saat dibuka kembali pada akhir September, mereka akan memberlakukan batas 2.000 pengunjung per hari.)

A marine scientist said that he and the other scientists made a mistake thinking that the money from the movie was very important, but now they see that the beach is a natural resource that they have to preserve.

(Seorang ilmuwan kelautan mengatakan bahwa dia bersama para ilmuwan lainnya salah menilai bahwa uang yang dihasilkan film itu sangat penting, tetapi kini mereka menyadari bahwa pantai itu adalah sumber daya alam yang harus mereka jaga.)

Zelda Tinska, an actress from the film, said that she honestly thinks that the West is a society which is obsessed with fame and celebrity. People do not visit the beach because they want to see the actual location but because there was a film shot there – and Thailand is an amazing country and there are many other beaches as beautiful as Maya Bay.

(Zelda Tinska, seorang artis dari film tersebut, mengatakan bahwa sejujurnya dia berfikir dunia barat adalah masyarakat yang terobsesi dengan ketenaran dan selebriti. Orang-orang berkunjung bukan karena pantai itu tetapi mereka ingin melihat lokasi pembuatan film- Thailand adalah negeri menakjubkan dan ada banyak pantai seindah Maya Bay.)
